Appreciate the seasons

I’m writing this at the start of February. Throughout the last month, I’ve been hearing people continually complain about January. It motivated me to write this. To offer another perspective.

I appreciate how it can be a difficult time of year though. Long, dark nights and cold days. We disrupt the winter with festivities, but then we have to face it again. People can also be affected with seasonal adjustment disorder, and none of this is intended to undermine that.

I know what it’s like to dislike the winter months.

I’ve spent a lot of time wishing away the winter with thoughts of the spring and summer. This happened a lot when I had a static caravan on the south coast. It filled my weekends in the warmer months and gave me a lot to look forward to. It also gave me a reason to resist the winter.

Things have changed though. I’ve changed. I now focus on what each month has to offer. Remember special memories from that time of year. January is a time I cherish now. It’s an opportunity to make a great start to the year and reflect on where I’d like to go. I tidy, I sort and I make plans.

I think it can really help if you can find some magic in each season. The fresh start delivered by spring, the sunshine of the summer and the cosiness of autumn. I haven’t forgotten winter. That’s a special time when we can reflect, celebrate and plant the seeds of change.

For me, it’s like meditation. Overcoming that resistance of the present moment. We forget it’s all we have. I’ve found that life gets a lot easier if we can accept and appreciate where we are. Make the most of now.
