Green and blue spaces
Where do you go to relax and unwind? To get away from it all and just refresh yourself. If you’re struggling to think of somewhere, I’ve got two helpful suggestions.
Although any kind of physical activity out the house is usually good for us, being in nature just takes it to another level. If you can, try to head out to one of the two places I’m about to describe.
Green spaces
Areas that are full of plants and greenery, often away from the concrete jungles a lot of people inhabit. We’ve evolved to associate greenery with food sources, so we should instinctively feel secure and at ease when we’re surrounded by them. Even having plants in your home can prompt a similar feeling.
The Japanese have a great practice called shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing. Just immersing yourself in nature. Wherever you are, take time to look for the nearest green space and head out as soon as you can. Be mindful of how you feel after.
Blue spaces
No prizes for guessing that these are areas around water. Lakes, sea, streams, rivers and waterfalls are just some suggestions. I’ll leave it to you to find out how it feels when we emmerse ourselves in blue spaces.
This is one I’m familiar with, as I live by a lot of blue spaces. I often tell people that you’ll never have the same walk by the sea. There’s always something different, new colours and so much to inspire you.
I’ll leave it to you to find and explore a green or blue space as soon as you can. You can also combine the experience with a lot of the ideas I present in my meditate and be mindful section. Make time in a green or blue space part of your practice.
Even if you live in the middle of a city, think about parks, canals and gardens. It could also be worth taking a trip out to a green or blue space when you can, and think about them when you’re planning holidays and breaks. I hope it helps.
