When productivity stops you working

Here’s a simple bit of advice that has always stuck with me. ‘Every minute you devote to productivity is one you’re not working’. It’s easy to forget this though, and look back with a lot of regret.

You’ll probably be tempted to throw time into setting up an amazing system that’s going to take care of everything. Then, when it’s in place it could take a lot of effort to make it work.

Logging things, moving them around and checking everything will take time. Time you won’t be working. You’ll probably find yourself endlessly tinkering with apps and making adjustments. This doesn’t just take time, it saps energy.

You could even reach a point where your complicated system simply stops working. It just takes too much time.

If this sounds familiar, I have some helpful advice for you:

  • Always consider your busiest day

  • Think about what actually needs to be done, and what takes care of itself

  • Only make it as complex as it has to be

What does all of this look like for you? It could be a great time to check yourself and make sure you’ve got everything carefully balanced out. Make productivity work for you, don’t let it be the boss and bring you down.
