Understand willpower

In this guide, we’ll explore what willpower really is. It all starts off with an incredible story, before we look at what’s going on in your body. We’ll learn that willpower isn’t something external, or some cosmic force. It’s something we can control, and we’re all different.

We feel bad when we can’t get things done. When we think we’ve failed. That we’re not enough. Let’s do something about that. Let’s uncover what’s really happening here. When we understand willpower, everything changes.

Below:

  • I’ll explain how willpower works

  • Explore how it affects people, often without them realising

  • Look at what we can do about it

  • Encourage you to think carefully about it

  • Share some things you can do

Why willpower is so important

I think they should teach children about willpower when they start school.

When we become aware that it’s essentially down to the amount of glucose our body produces, it makes a difference. When we understand that we effectively have an energy bar and we’re all different, we can do something about it.

We can start to manage that energy bar. Become aware of our peak times.

More importantly, we can be easier on ourselves. Understand why mistakes are made and why we often don’t get the results we want.

This video will explain how even the best of us may not understand willpower and what it can do.

Have a think about when you’re likely to have willpower available throughout your day. You should also think about what you’re doing to maintain it. Mealtimes and periods of rest are a great place to start.

This should lead you to two important things we need to be aware of. When we’re likely to be at our best, and when we’re likely to be vulnerable. This video will help you with that.

I think the best example of how understanding willpower is so important is when we start a new job. Think about it, everything will be new. Just getting to work, finding where everything is and having to learn all those new things will really drain your natural energy bar.

If people don’t understand willpower though, they will probably decide they don’t like that new job. That it’s just too much for them.

When they understand willpower though, they know what’s really happening. They know that when they become more familiar with things, it’s likely to get better. When they develop routines and when they understand how to do things, It’s going to get easier.

It can really make a difference. When we understand willpower, we can be easier on ourselves and do things to make it work for us.

We can then take it further…

Bringing willpower into Alignment

This is where we connect everything here with what I’ve introduced in the Alignment section. Remember that stress bottle, because this is how understanding willpower can help you empty it.

This is where I explain how I approach willpower, and the effect it’s had on me.
